Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores the adoption of cloud computing for digital preservation, focusing on the case of Preservica, a leading provider of software-as-a-service (SaaS)-based digital preservation solutions. This study aims to analyse Preservica’s approach to long-term active digital preservation (LTADP) based on internationally accepted standards.

Design/methodology/approach

The research paper conducts an in-depth analysis of Preservica’s SaaS-based cloud computing solution in relation to ISO 14721:2012 (OAIS) and ISO 9001 standards. It examines the steps followed by Preservica for LTADP and highlights the importance of adherence to relevant standards.

Findings

Preservica’s adoption of cloud computing and the SaaS model offers scalable, cost-effective and flexible solutions for digital preservation. By adhering to internationally accepted standards and following a comprehensive set of LTADP steps, including file format identification, compatibility checks, checksum creation, secure storage, preservation status tracking, change monitoring, format migration and periodic testing, Preservica ensures the long-term preservation and accessibility of digital content.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the understanding of how cloud computing can be effectively used for digital preservation by examining Preservica’s approach. It emphasizes the significance of adherence to internationally accepted standards and highlights the benefits of integrating acceptance models to optimize the implementation and user acceptance of Preservica.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to visualize the trend topics in the research area of library and information science (LIS) in India during 1989–2021.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was extracted from the Web of Science core collection database (WoSCC) database from 1989 to 2021. For creating the network visualization maps from the data, freely available softwares, VOSviewer (VV) and Biblioshiny (a Web-interface for bibliometrix), were used.

Findings

Results support the prediction that in the future, Indian LIS research will focus on areas such as deep learning, machine learning, artificial intelligence and block chain technology. Among the most prolific authors Satija, M.P (Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar) and Prathap, G (APJ Abdul Kalam Technology University) secured top positions in LIS research. Scientometric ranked the top journal or the core journal after applying Bradford law.

Originality/value

The visualization of trend topics in LIS research from 1989 to 2021, 32 years of time span, is the first of its kind.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to visualize the key literature on the topic “Open Educational Resources” using the research discovery tool “Litmaps”.

Design/methodology/approach

Litmaps visual citation navigation, the ultimate science discovery platform, is used for the present study. It provides an interface for discovering scientific literature, explores the research landscape and discovers articles that are highly connected to maps. Litmaps provides quick-start options to import articles from reference manager, keyword search, ORCID ID, DOI or using a seed article. In this paper, “keyword search” and research strategy “Open Educational Resources” or “OER” are put to use.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed that Litmaps gives citations between articles over time visually. The map generated is dynamic as it is adjustable for making the map according to the researcher’s needs.

Research limitations/implications

Litmaps helps researchers in doing the literature review in a very brief and systematic way. It is helpful in finding the related or relevant studies through the seed paper/keyword search.

Originality/value

The study makes a useful contribution to the literature on this topic as one can independently find research topics and also compare topic overlapping. The study provides insights that help researchers in building citation maps and see connections between articles over time. The originality of the present paper lies in highlighting the importance of the research discovery tool Litmaps for the researchers as so far, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no research has been taken place on using it.

Abstract

Purpose

User review is a significant component of mobile app markets such as the Google Play Store, App Store, Microsoft Store and others. Users submit their reviews for downloaded apps on these sites in the form of star ratings and text reviews. Apps can contain huge volumes of feedback, making it difficult for the user and the developer to skim through thousands of such reviews to get an insight into usage and impact of such apps. Thus, the current study aims to assess the usage and satisfaction among users of the Mendeley’s Android app vs iOS app.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytics are performed by using Appbot analytics software which captured, monitored, measured and analyzed the review results for a particular period. Appbot provides easy-to-understand insights of an app using artificial intelligence algorithm tools.

Findings

The findings of the study reveal strong inclination, adoption and usage of Mendeley’s Android app compared to that of iOS among users.

Originality/value

The value of this research is in getting an insight of the pattern/behavior of users towards using apps on different platforms (Android vs iOS) and provides valuable results for the app developers in monitoring usage and enhancing features for the satisfaction of users. Without mobile app analytics, one will be blindly trying out different things without any evidence to back up their experiments.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent COVID-19 pandemic affects all segments of the population in all possible fields of life. To encounter this critical situation and to safeguard the health of the library users & library staff, the library services have been forced to adapt and accept the “new normal” and give a greater use and reliance on virtual space than ever before with physical spaces. This paper aims to demonstrate an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven solution that can be practically implemented in the form of a “InfoBot” or “Chatbot” to fulfil user needs 24/7 with minimal or without human intervention.

Design/methodology/approach

To give a general overview of the use of AI Chatbot in libraries and its multitasking features followed by the practical implementation, a versatile AIchatbot service, Engati is used as a target bot with its basic free plan.

Findings

The study findings reveal that AI Chatbots offer a dependable solution for the libraries to initiate virtual assistance, thus augmenting the reference service while adding a newer dimension to virtual reference service.

Social implications

Innovative and intelligent information service would be overcoming the time and location barriers reaffirming the concept of “library without walls” while falling in line with the five laws of library science as propounded by Dr S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India.

Originality/value

Though the implementation of bots and chatbots is not a purely novel concept to explore, no such research has been conducted focusing particularly on its exceptional benefits in the library in reference to the recent pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss with an introductory narrative on the models and its role in the context of librarianship.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores the relationship between researcher development and library research support. The authors observed the interconnectedness of the two concepts and how this should be studied more with respect to librarianship. Five major higher education and researcher development–related models are examined to assess which would be more suited for library’s research support activities. Accordingly, Prof Linda Evans’ conceptual researcher development model, the Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF), the Research Skill Development Framework, Society of College, National and University Libraries Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model and Association of College and Research Libraries’ Standards for Libraries in Higher Education were reviewed. Review and examination of the frameworks, along with relevant literature on the topic, were examined.

Findings

The authors found that the Vitae RDF seemed most ideal, as it was comprehensive and detailed in presentation and could be used not just by the academic staff but also by librarians and researchers to their benefit.

Research limitations/implications

Further studies and thorough review of recent educational and library-related frameworks and models are required from the lens of library research support.

Practical implications

Application of frameworks needs to be actively adopted by librarians.

Originality/value

There are few studies that have examined researcher development and research support in librarianship in conjunction. The present study has aimed to bridge this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

In distance education, massive open online courses (MOOCs) are recent innovative approaches, which strive to provide learning content to all the participants without any demographic-related barriers. The purpose of this research is to analyse and evaluate the popularity of two MOOCs platforms, Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) and Coursera, on an android app by pursuing the paradigm of mobile analytics and deep learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytics are performed by using the Web application AppFollow (AppFollow.io), which captured, monitored, measured and analysed the app review results.

Findings

The findings of the paper suggest MOOCs designers should consider sentiment analysis to check and evaluate users’ ratings and feedback to improvise its design.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of the study will provide the necessary inputs and feedbacks to the app developers to understand the users’ problems, users’ perspectives and users’ requirement in a scientific and precise way. By removing the bugs and incorporating the value-added features, the MOOC platforms will become more productive and beneficial in terms of knowledge sharing, skill development and capacity building.

Originality/value

This research is novel in getting an insight into the behaviour of users towards usage of SWAYAM and Coursera apps on Android platforms through the AppFollow software and provides valuable results for the app developers in monitoring the feedbacks to enhancing the features for the satisfaction of users. The present analysis is expected to provide a benchmark for future research in this domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and identify the status of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) conformance levels (A, AA, AAA) and accessibility status in terms of Severity (Error, Warning and Review) and Responsibility (Editor, Webmaster and Developer) of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Library websites based on Siteimprove Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform.

Design/methodology/approach

The library websites of IITs were tested using Siteimprove web-tool to gather details pertaining to W3C's WCAG 2.1 standards. The data thus obtained were then visualized using spreadsheet software for greater insight. A partial correlation test was also done to assess the relationship between the three conformance levels.

Findings

The study could identify significant accessibility-related limitations of the IIT library websites concerning the three WCAG 2.1 conformance levels A (max IIT Bombay), AA (max IIT Dhanbad (ISM)) and AAA (max IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Varanasi (BHU)), Severity and Responsibility. A positive linear relationship exists amongst these conformance levels. The mean value of conformance levels were found to be 18.3 (A), 2.2 (AA) and 3.1 (AAA); Severity scores were found to be 14.4 (Error), 3.9 (Warning) and 5.2 (Review); and Responsibility scores were found to be 6 (Editor), 9.3 (Webmaster) and 8.3 (Developer), respectively.

Practical implications

The study highlights the comparative picture of accessibility issues and conformance levels of the IITs' library website homepage with the help of results derived/based on Siteimprove Accessibility Checker. The findings of the study reveal that though the library website of IITs' in India possess a well-designed and easily navigable website homepage as far as their accessibility for VIPs is concerned, there are several issues that are still to be resolved.

Social implications

World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Marrakesh VIP Treaty (MVT) and the W3C's WCAG cater to the requirements and rights of the persons with vision-related disability of accessing information and knowledge building a steeper and deeper knowledge divide. Identifying and rectifying the shortcomings in the library websites will bridge the accessibility-divide and make the society more inclusive.

Originality/value

No previous study could be identified evaluating the accessibility issues of the library website of Indian IITs focussed on vision-disabled persons using Siteimprove. The methodology and approach of this paper have value in terms of reusability and reproducibility facilitating future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to cite the statistical data reflecting the trends and tendencies in research activity undertaken by Chandigarh city affiliations. The period under study is from 1964 to the first quarter of 2014. Scopus is the source of information retrieved. Various parameters like decade-wise growth of publications, publications of individual institutions, number of patents earned by each institute of Chandigarh under study, research productivity of top five authors of seven city-based institutes, document type, highly cited papers, research output of authors of parent institute vis-á-vis their affiliations with other institutes, collaborations at national and international levels have been taken into consideration for this paper. Institutes which have come up in the past 2-3 decades have also been contributing actively. An important finding of the paper undertaken is that foreign collaborations and foreign journals have remained the epicenter of the research activity. Chandigarh has emerged as a hub of academic and scholarly activity. It also reflects that the city-based research activity is also integrated into the global research activity.

Design/methodology/approach

The present paper reviews the publication output of Chandigarh city affiliations from 1964 to 2014. The publication data were procured from Scopus, which is an international multi-disciplinary bibliographical database covering 53m records, more than 20,000 titles and 5,000 publishers. It is a product of Elsevier and is the considered the world’s largest indexing and abstracting database and offers citation searching. Launched in 2004, it provides access to science–technology–medicine (STM) literature with a limited coverage of social science and arts and humanities. Database search was undertaken on May 22nd, 2014, and results were downloaded under various headings like year, author, number of publications, document type, affiliations and collaborations with other nations. The whole data were exported to MS-Excel format from Scopus database. Data of 160 authors were retrieved on the basis of at least one author affiliated to a research institution in Chandigarh. The paper was conducted by focussing on top seven institutes of Chandigarh engaged in diverse fields. These are Panjab University (PU), Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Govt. Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Punjab Engineering College (PEC), University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) and Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIO). Although UIPS is an integral part of PU, Scopus has treated it as a separate institution and so have the researchers. The researchers have used simple percentile method to find out the growth in research output of these institutes in six decades covering the period from 1964 to the first quarter of 2014, collaborations with other nations and affiliations with other institutes. Taking into consideration the number of publications, their citations and h index, the researchers have tried to find out the most productive authors from these institutes. Although the research process in Panjab University was started early in 1926 as revealed by Scopus, to maintain the uniformity with the research process initiated by other city-based institutes, the authors have taken 1964 as the year of initiation of data analysis for writing this paper. Each city-based institute has to its credit research publications in more than 20 diverse subject areas. Due to this diversity, data could not be analyzed under subject areas. To study the research output of Chandigarh city affiliations for the past 50 years and the current year, the authors have divided the years into five decades and additional few months of 2014.

Findings

There has been a phenomenal growth in the research productivity of city-based institutes, which was nil or negligible from 1964 to 1983, except Panjab University and PGI. The research activity gained momentum with every passing decade. PGI and PU have emerged as frontrunners in research productivity, but at the same time, IMTECH and UIPS have also performed well on this front too. As compared to PGI and PU, which came up in 1962 and 1956 (Chandigarh), respectively, IMTECH and UIPS are of recent origin, that is, 1984 and 1994, respectively. In the first decade of its establishment, UIPS generated 27 per cent of its total research output. Not only this, the institute has fetched maximum number of patents (89) in just two decades and that too with 1,259 publications only. IMTECH has also been coming up with qualitative research since its establishment in 1984. It has to its credit 37 patents from 1,290 publications. Major research findings took the form of articles and that too in journals. Another remarkable feature of UIPS and IMTECH is that their publications have fetched maximum citations as compared to other institutes. Comparing all the seven institutes, the authors have concluded that the authors of Panjab University have made maximum affiliation with the authors of with other national and international institutes in generating research output. Panjab University tops the list of city-based institutes by collaborating with 97 different nations. PGI has taken second slot by collaborating with 88 countries. From a list of 100 collaborating nations, USA has emerged as the major collaborating nation. Chandigarh has emerged as an education hub. It has many institutes of repute in different domains. Consequently, the research scenario is very encouraging. Researchers have a vision and are active in exploring the emerging horizons as is evident from the paper. National and international collaborations also form the basis of growth of research productivity. Government should provide all round support and upgrade the existing infrastructure to enhance further the research output of the city.

Originality/value

Various bibliometric studies have also been conducted to know about the trends and patterns in the research publications. From a single institute, journal to a state, the analysis of research activity has become an area of focus. The present paper takes into account the research productivity in seven major academic institutes of Chandigarh, the city beautiful as revealed by Scopus.
